The New Era of Gangsterism

Fundamental rules of society seem to be breaking down.  In the financial world, the Wall Street frauds broke all the rules, paid off all the regulators, bilked billions and billions from investors who were only slightly less greedy than they were, and as a result they seemed to have succeeded in destroying the u s economy.

In the political world, rod Blagojevich ignored rules of a different sort.  He threatened to cut off funding to a children’s hospital if they didn’t give him political contributions.  He violated federal law by importing Canadian drugs into the country to pay off his pharmaceutical-addicted voter base.  He attempted to sell off the United States senate seat to the highest bidder.  A seat that once belonged to the current President of the United States.

And he’s not the only lawbreaker in the political world.  The new treasury secretary Timothy Gainer didn’t see fit to pay his taxes until he was nominated for the position he currently holds.  Our current attorney general Eric Holder worked with Bill Clinton to let millionaire lawbreaker and Clinton campaign contributor, Mark Rich go free.  So it’s a new era in Washington DC. Just like the new era we’ve seen on Wall Street.  It’s a new era of criminality, a new era of corruption.  A new era of financial disaster.  And the worst part of it is our leaders are unwilling to do anything about it, or are actively in on the graft themselves.

During the prohibition era of the 1920’s, there were corrupt leaders, paid off officials, and gangsters of the lowest order, just as there are today. But in that era at least there was an Elliot Ness; at least there were the Untouchables.  In this day and age, in this era, all of our leaders are touchable.
